27 Bible Verses for Overwhelming Times You Need to Read

We all get overwhelmed from time to time. Life seems to throw more at us than we think we can possibly handle at one time. Feeling overwhelmed and stressed can make it hard to keep your faith up that things will be alright. It can make you want to shut down and stop everything. If that’s how you’re feeling today, I’d like to share my favorite Bible verses for overwhelming times with you.

What Does It Mean When Someone is Overwhelmed?

Dictionary.com defines overwhelm as “to overcome completely in mind or feeling” and overcome as “to get the better of in struggle or conflict.” Putting those two definitions together, to be overwhelmed is when something gets the better of you in mind or feeling. Dictionary definitions aside, you probably don’t need me to define it for you because you know it when you feel it.

If you feel like you are about to be overcome, like you are stressed to the max and have all you can handle, you are overwhelmed. You might feel like you can’t catch a break and like no matter how much you work you just can’t catch up or live up to expectations. It may have gotten to the point that all you want to do is hide.

Why turn to Bible Verses for Overwhelming Times?

I turn to Bible verses for overwhelming times when I need some guidance. When I’m at the end of my rope – that’s when I want something to change. I feel like no one understands me or what I’m going through. It’s when I’m at my weakest, that I need God to be my strength. I need Him to comfort my heart and help me past the overwhelm. I need him to show me where to step next when I don’t know the way myself.

What I’m sharing with you today, are the scriptures that comfort my heart and get me through those overwhelming times. They give me the strength that I need to take a breath and try again.

(These verses are all from the King James Version)

How Can I Get More Out of these Bible Verses for Overwhelming Times?

I love just reading these scriptures off a list like this, but when I want to dig deeper, I read them out of the Bible. I turn to each one and I read them in context, usually with the rest of the chapter around it. It makes for some very comforting thoughts during the day when you read and allow yourself to ponder them. Sometimes I pray about them if I don’t understand, and sometimes even when I think I understand, the Lord reveals something else to me about it.

I have also written them down on an index card, or in my journal. Writing them helps me to remember them better and if it’s on an index card, I leave it where I can re-read it during the day.

The Last Thing You Need to Know about Bible Verses for Overwhelming Times

Our thoughts reflect what we consume. If you always read or hear bad news, that’s what your mind is going to dwell on. However, when you consume good things, it steers your thoughts towards those as well. I know which one I’d rather think about. Even when the world is at its craziest, when I feel overwhelmed, and don’t want to go on, I know that nothing is too big for God. He’s always in control and he is more Almighty than my brain has the capacity to imagine. We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we know who holds tomorrow. I take great comfort in that, and I hope that you do too.
