7 Ways to Keep Going When You Want To Give Up
Have you ever started something new? I bet you were excited at first. You probably felt like you could handle anything and you put all of your energy into this new endeavor. Whatever the goal was – losing weight, starting a blog, beginning your career – it was something you’re passionate about.
When you first get started with a new goal or passion project, everything seems fun and exciting. But that excitement can soon wear off. You aren’t losing as much weight as you’d like, your blog isn’t growing as much as you’d hoped it would, you aren’t making as much money as you wanted to. As time goes on and you don’t see the results you were expecting, it’s easy to get discouraged.
Growth and change are hard, and they take time. But you shouldn’t give up before the hard work begins paying off. So, if you’re ever going through something like this, when nothing seems to be working and you just feel like giving up, remember these 7 things!
1. Remind yourself why you started in the first place.
When you feel like giving up, one of the biggest ways you can motivate yourself to keep going is to remember your ‘why.’ Why did you start this journey or set this goal in the first place? I’m guessing you had a good reason to start, so don’t stop. Don’t lose sight of your ‘why.’ Use it to remind yourself to keep going!
2. Have patience with yourself.
When you feel frustrated and you feel like giving up, have patience with yourself. You’re doing the best you can and you can only do so much right now. Maybe you just don’t have enough time or resources at the moment, and that’s not your fault. Look at how far you’ve come and be proud of yourself. You’ve come so far, so be patient. Good things usually take time. Savor your journey.
3. Focus on the here and now.
So, let’s say that you want to lose 40 pounds. That’s a good goal, but it’s somewhat out of your control. You can’t snap your fingers and make it happen, and you can’t control when it will happen. All you can do is take the actions that you need to take so you can make it to that goal eventually. So, focus on the here and now and do what you can to get there whenever you get there. Focus more on what you’re currently doing and focus less on when it will happen.
4. Seek out inspiration.
If you feel like giving up because you’re stuck in a rut, don’t worry. We all get in a “funk” sometimes, and they can be hard to get out of. Instead of wallowing in the rut and giving up, try to find some inspiration. Do things that inspire you. Talk to a mentor, listen to music, take a break, meditate, look up new ways of approaching what you’re trying to accomplish, give yourself a change of scenery, write in your journal – do whatever works best for you.
5. Surround yourself with positive people.
It’s been said that there’s a good chance that we become like the people we spend most of our time with. If you’re constantly hanging around negative people, it’s going to bring you down and you’ll probably become pretty negative. So, surround yourself with positive people that support you and make you feel more positive. People like that will help make you a better person and support you, instead of dragging you down.
6. Think about how you’ll feel if you stay where you are.
Envision your future for a second. Imagine what life would look like in a year (or a few) if you gave up right now. Then imagine what your life would look like if you kept going and achieved what you’re trying to achieve. You have the choice to either give up and chase after that future or keep going and chase after your goal.
7. Consider changing paths.
If you really, really feel like your goal isn’t working or you just don’t want to do it anymore, then maybe it’s not for you. But that doesn’t mean you should give up! Consider changing paths instead. Is there something else that you’d like to do? Is there a different goal that’s more suited to you? Explore the possibilities and the different opportunities available to you. Maybe it’s just time to find something new to chase after.
When you’re going after something that you really want, things can get hard. Sometimes things are out of your control and you might be tempted to give up. But remember that anything worth having usually takes time and hard work. Try your hardest to keep going because it’ll be worth it!
